Broken Time Translation Symmetry as a Model for Quantum State Reduction

چکیده

The symmetries that govern the laws of nature can be spontaneously broken, enabling the occurrence of ordered states. Crystals arise from the breaking of translation symmetry, magnets from broken spin rotation symmetry and massive particles break a phase rotation symmetry. Time translation symmetry can be spontaneously broken in exactly the same way. The order associated with this form of spontaneous symmetry breaking is characterised by the emergence of quantum state reduction: systems which spontaneously break time translation symmetry act as ideal measurement machines. In this review the breaking of time translation symmetry is first compared to that of other symmetries such as spatial translations and rotations. It is then discussed how broken time translation symmetry gives rise to the process of quantum state reduction and how it generates a pointer basis, Born’s rule, etc. After a comparison between this model and alternative approaches to the problem of quantum state reduction, the experimental implications and possible tests of broken time translation symmetry in realistic experimental settings are discussed.

Universal construction of order parameters for translation-invariant quantum lattice systems with symmetry-breaking order.

For any translation-invariant quantum lattice system with a symmetry group G, we propose a practical and universal construction of order parameters which identify quantum phase transitions with symmetry-breaking order. They are defined in terms of the fidelity between a ground state and its symmetry-transformed counterpart, and are computed through tensor network representations of the ground-s...

Quantum fidelity for degenerate ground states in quantum phase transitions.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum phase transitions leads to a system having degenerate ground states in its broken-symmetry phase. In order to detect all possible degenerate ground states for a broken-symmetry phase, we introduce a quantum fidelity defined as an overlap measurement between a system ground state and an arbitrary reference state. If a system has N-fold degenerate ground s...

Wigner crystallization in the quantum 1D jellium at all densities

The jellium is a model, introduced by Wigner (1934), for a gas of electrons moving in a uniform neutralizing background of positive charge. Wigner suggested that the repulsion between electrons might lead to a broken translational symmetry. For classical one-dimensional systems this fact was proven by Kunz (1974), while in the quantum setting, Brascamp and Lieb (1975) proved translation symmetr...

As a specific direction in n–space is selected for the net magnetization M~ , there is a spontaneously broken symmetry, and a correspond ing long–range order is established in the system. Quantum Squeezed Light Propagation in an Optical Parity-Time (PT)-Symmetric Structure

We investigate the medium effect of a parity-time (PT)-symmetric bilayer on the quantum optical properties of an incident squeezed light at zero temperature (T=0 K). To do so, we use the canonical quantization approach and describe the amplification and dissipation properties of the constituent layers of the bilayer structure by Lorentz model to analyze the quadrature squeezing of the outgoing ...
